San Diego Fire Ravages 3 Populated Areas – Latest Updates

San Diego County faced a challenging day on January 21, with three separate fires breaking out in Lilac, Pala, and Friars. Local agencies, schools, and utility companies collaborated to ensure safety, manage evacuations, and mitigate fire-related disruptions.

The Lilac Fire was reported early in the morning at 1:19 a.m. near Old Highway 395 and Lilac Road in Bonsall. The blaze spread across 85 acres, prompting evacuation orders and warnings.

By the evening, CAL FIRE/San Diego County Fire reported 50% containment. Firefighters utilized aerial resources and closely monitored wind conditions to contain the flames.

While evacuations were lifted later in the day, certain roads, including Old Highway 395 and parts of West Lilac Road, remain closed as crews work to reinforce control lines and address potential hazards.

The San Diego Sheriff’s Department (SDS) advised residents to remain cautious as firefighters continue their efforts.

“Dust and noise will be present throughout the day and night, and smoke may still be visible in some areas, but there is no threat to the public,” the department noted.

The Pala Fire followed shortly after, starting at 2:16 a.m. near Old Highway 395 and Canonita Drive in Fallbrook. It burned 17 acres but was quickly contained by CAL FIRE. Evacuation orders were lifted, though residents were urged to drive cautiously as recovery efforts continued in the area.

Later in the day, the Friars Fire broke out at 12:32 p.m. near Friars Road and Via De La Moda in San Diego. The fire consumed 3 acres before being fully contained. Crews conducted mop-up operations to extinguish hot spots, and road closures remain in effect in some areas to facilitate recovery.

Amid these incidents, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department relocated the temporary evacuation point for the Lilac Fire from Castle Creek Country Club in Escondido to Riverview Church in Bonsall, offering essentials to evacuees.

The fires also caused widespread disruption to local schools. The San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) announced closures in multiple districts, including Julian Union Elementary, Julian Union High, Mountain Empire Unified, and Warner Unified. Bonsall Unified, Spencer Valley, and Mt. Woodson Elementary in the Ramona Unified School District were also closed. Additionally, the Linda Vista campus and Innovation Center were evacuated as a precaution. Some schools, like those in Mountain Empire Unified and Warner Springs School Districts, remained closed into January 22 due to power outages.

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) implemented Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) in affected areas to prevent further hazards. The utility company encouraged residents to check their online outage map for real-time updates and to prioritize safety during the outages.

While the fires brought significant challenges, the collaborative response from local agencies, firefighters, and the community ensured safety and progress toward recovery. The swift containment of the Pala and Friars fires and ongoing efforts to control the Lilac Fire underscore the importance of coordinated action in times of crisis.
