The call came out of nowhere, catching me in the middle of my morning routine—half a cup of lukewarm coffee in one hand, a pile of bills in the other.
“Miss Rachel?” the solicitor’s voice crackled over the line. “We need to discuss your ex-husband Todd’s estate.”
I frowned. “Todd’s estate? What estate?”
The man cleared his throat. “Your ex-husband passed away last week. You are the sole beneficiary.”
I nearly dropped my coffee.
“Excuse me?” I whispered. “There must be a mistake. Todd wouldn’t… he couldn’t have left me anything.”
But it wasn’t a mistake.
Todd—the man who once claimed he couldn’t afford child support—had left me everything.
The house. The investments. The savings. Even his precious vintage car, Pearl.
I barely had time to process the shock before a knock sounded at my front door. I opened it to find Angela, Todd’s widow, standing there with a newborn baby in a stroller and fire in her eyes.
“You’ve got some nerve, Rachel,” she spat.
Angela, the woman Todd had left me for.
She was furious. And she had every reason to be.
The Unbelievable Inheritance
For fifteen years, Todd and I had built a life together. Three kids, a home, a partnership—or so I thought. Then, out of the blue, he told me he needed “space.”
“Everything feels so… heavy,” he’d said, avoiding my eyes.
The “space” he needed turned out to be Angela—his 25-year-old secretary who, according to Todd, just needed some help “rebuilding her credit.”
Within a year, Todd had married Angela. I had picked up the shattered pieces of my life and focused on my kids. I moved on—or at least, I thought I had.
So why, after all these years, had he chosen me over her?
Angela wasn’t interested in the why. She wanted answers.
“Where is it?” she demanded.
I crossed my arms. “Where is what?”
“The will,” she hissed. “The documents. Whatever proof you have that my husband—MY husband—would leave you everything while his child gets nothing!”
I stared at the sleeping baby in the stroller, a pang of guilt tugging at my chest.
“Angela, I didn’t ask for this,” I said. “I had no idea until this morning.”
“That’s a lie!” she shrieked. “You manipulated him! You stole what’s rightfully mine and my son’s!”
“Angela,” I said slowly, “I didn’t take anything. Todd made this decision. Maybe you should be asking yourself why.”
Her face turned bright red.
“You’re a snake,” she spat. “Give me what’s mine, or I will take you to court.”
I met her glare. “Then take me to court.”
Angela stormed off, vowing revenge. But something about her anger didn’t sit right.
Todd’s Final Words
The next morning, I called Todd’s attorney.
“Miss Rachel,” he said, his voice careful. “Todd left you the estate for a reason. He also left you a letter explaining why.”
“A letter?” My stomach twisted.
“Would you like me to read it?”
I gripped the phone. “Yes.”
The solicitor took a breath and began:
“Rachel,
If you’re reading this, I’m gone. And you’re probably wondering why I did this.
Angela and I had our issues. If the baby she’s carrying is even mine, I doubt it’ll change anything. I don’t trust her. I don’t want my money going to someone who never earned it.
You, on the other hand, gave me 15 years of your life. You raised our kids. You stood by me even when I didn’t deserve it. This is my way of making it right. I know I can’t fix the past, but I can try to fix the future.
Angela can’t con her way into this one. Everything is legally airtight.
I’m sorry for everything.
—Todd”
The line went silent.
My heart hammered. “He knew,” I whispered.
The solicitor hesitated. “Yes. He came to my office three days before he passed. He knew his time was running out.”
I pressed my fingers against my temple. “Damn you, Todd,” I muttered.
He had spent years lying to me, to our kids, to Angela. And now, at the very end, he finally saw the damage he had done.
But it was too late.
A Shocking Truth
Angela followed through on her threats. She contested the will, claiming Todd’s decision was “unfair” and that she and her child had been cheated out of their rightful inheritance.
Her lawyer painted me as a bitter ex-wife, someone clinging to revenge.
But there was one thing she didn’t count on.
Todd’s letter.
And the DNA test.
Angela had insisted Todd’s son deserved his inheritance. But the judge ordered a paternity test—and the results stunned everyone.
Todd wasn’t the father.
Angela had lied.
When the results were read in court, Angela’s face drained of color.
The truth was out. Todd must have suspected it all along—that’s why he changed his will.
Angela had played her cards, but she lost everything.
The Final Decision
At the end of it all, I was left with a choice.
Keep everything Todd had left me?
Or give some of it away?
I thought about Angela’s baby—an innocent child who had no part in this mess. I thought about my kids, who had watched their father walk away, only to regret it at the very end.
In the end, I decided on something Todd never would have expected.
I kept the house, the investments, and the stocks—but I sold Pearl, Todd’s beloved car, and put the money into a trust fund. Not for Angela. Not for her child.
But for my own kids.
The money would go toward their college funds, their futures—something Todd should have done a long time ago.
Angela, on the other hand, disappeared. She left town, humiliated.
And Todd? Well, he got exactly what he deserved—his legacy was left in my hands.
Some might call it karma.
I call it justice.
What would YOU have done?
