A man has opened up about the terrifying moment he received a text from his wife just moments before the plane she was on collided mid-air with a US military helicopter over Washington, DC, on Wednesday night, January 29.
The incident involved American Airlines Flight 5432, a Bombardier CRJ700, which was en route to its destination when it collided with a Black Hawk helicopter operated by the U.S. military. The collision occurred in the skies above the capital, sending shockwaves through the aviation community and raising concerns about airspace safety.
The husband, who wishes to remain anonymous, shared that he had just received a text from his wife, who was on board the flight, telling him everything was fine, just moments before the crash occurred. “I was reading her message when I heard the news reports,” he said, visibly shaken. “I couldn’t believe it. I immediately tried calling her, but there was no response. I thought I might have lost her.”
In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the Black Hawk and the Bombardier CRJ700 had collided mid-air at approximately 8:30 PM ET. While the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, initial reports suggest that both the airplane and the helicopter were in close proximity to each other in a busy section of airspace.
Fortunately, both aircraft managed to land safely. The passengers aboard the American Airlines flight and the personnel on the military helicopter were all reported to be safe, though several individuals were treated for minor injuries.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to understand the circumstances leading to the collision.
“I’m just so grateful that she made it out of there,” the husband said, adding that he and his wife have since been in contact, though he continues to process the emotional rollercoaster of the event. “It’s a miracle.”
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a full investigation into the collision to determine if any safety protocols were violated or if there were lapses in communication between the aircraft involved.
As the investigation continues, both the FAA and military officials have stressed the importance of maintaining strict protocols and communication procedures to prevent such incidents from happening again.
“I can’t imagine what it must have been like for everyone on board,” the husband reflected. “I know we were lucky this time, but we need to make sure something like this doesn’t happen again.”
